Safety Officer – Marikana

Position Type: ContractorReporting to: Operations ManagerLocation: Marikana, North West

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement and monitor site-specific health and safety plans, procedures and safe work practices for construction and installation activities.
  • Ensure compliance with mine site rules, client requirements, contractor procedures and applicable South African health and safety legislation, including the Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Conduct baseline, issue-based and continuous risk assessments for work activities such as lifting operations, working at height, hot work, confined spaces, electrical work, piping, mechanical installation and commissioning support.
  • Carry out daily site inspections, planned task observations and safety audits, and ensure corrective actions are tracked and closed out.
  • Facilitate toolbox talks, induction training, refresher training and safety awareness campaigns for employees and subcontractors.
  • Monitor permit-to-work compliance and verify that high-risk activities are properly authorised and controlled.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain safety records and reports, including inspection registers, incident statistics, induction records, training records and legal compliance documentation.
  • Participate in safety meetings with the client, mine representatives, supervisors and subcontractors, and communicate safety performance and concerns.
  • Monitor use of personal protective equipment and ensure that unsafe acts and conditions are addressed immediately.
  • Support emergency preparedness, drills and response coordination relevant to the project and mine site.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and stop unsafe work where there is an immediate risk to people, plant or the environment.

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Relevant qualification in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Recognised safety training such as SAMTRAC, COMSOC 1 and 2, or equivalent safety qualification.
  • Proven knowledge of, or practical experience in, mining safety requirements and working on mine sites.
  • Experience in construction, mechanical installation, piping, civil works or industrial plant projects will be an advantage.
  • Good working knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation and legal compliance monitoring.
  • Knowledge of South African mine health and safety legislation and site safety systems.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel and report writing.
  • Medically fit to work on a mine site
