Job Description
- A qualified speech language therapist, or an early childhood teacher with a strong speech language and communication background.
- Understanding of developmental, relationship-based approaches
- Teaching experience, ideally in early childhood of foundation phase
- Experience working with AAC, early communication systems and alternative ways of supporting expressive language.
- Comfortable supporting oral motor development and motor planning for speech
- Interest in and willingness to integrate OT and PT goals into daily activities.
- Able to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Warm, energetic and genuinely kind in their approach to the child.
- Respectful of family boundaries and comfortable working in a home-based environment
- Flexible and open minded, willing to try different approaches and adapt based on the child’s responses rather than following a fixed programme.
- This option is for a candidate who can independently plan and implement the program while maintaining the same developmental philosophy currently in place.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
- Three hours individualised teaching each morning in a home-based learning environment
- Planning and implementing an individualised CAPS aligned Grade 00 programme.
- Embedding communication goals across the day
- Supporting expressive communication using AAC, starting with picture-based systems and gradually moving towards digital supports/verbal expression
- Supporting oral motor development and motor planning for speech
- Using Makaton based signs to support understanding and expression.
- Creating activities that integrate communication, play, early literacy and numeracy.
- Observing the child closely and adapting activities based on his regulation, engagement and motivation.
- Working respectfully within the family’s home and routines
- Communicating openly and regularly with parents
- Collaborating with OT and PT, including attending therapy sessions approximately once a month to support integration of gross motor, visual spatial, fine motor and sensory processing goals into daily activities
- Being guided by what works for the child rather than rigid programmes or checklists.
- Fluent in English, good Afrikaans
