Job Summary / Purpose The Junior CNC Lathe Operator & Setter is responsible for operating and assisting with the setting of CNC lathe machines to produce precision components according to engineering drawings and production requirements. The role focuses on learning correct setup procedures, ensuring quality standards, maintaining machine efficiency, and supporting senior setters and toolmakers. Key Responsibilities Machine Operation Operate CNC lathe machines according to job cards and instructions. Load and unload components safely and efficiently. Monitor machining cycles to ensure smooth operation. Stop machines and report abnormalities immediately. Setting Assistance Assist senior setters with machine setup and changeovers. Load tooling, inserts, and work-holding devices under supervision. Set basic tool offsets and work coordinates as instructed. Perform test cuts and assist with first-off inspections. Quality Control Measure components using verniers, micrometers, and gauges. Ensure parts meet drawing and tolerance requirements. Identify and report defects or deviations. Maintain consistent product quality during production runs. Basic Programming Support (Training Level) Load CNC programs and ensure correct program selection. Make minor offset adjustments when authorised. Understand basic G-code and machine functions. Housekeeping & Safety Maintain clean and organised work areas (5S). Follow all health, safety, and company procedures. Use PPE correctly at all times. Report safety hazards immediately. Machine Care Perform basic daily machine checks. Clean machines and work areas at the end of shifts. Assist with preventative maintenance tasks as instructed. Minimum Requirements Grade 1012 (Matric advantageous). CNC machining or technical training (advantageous). Basic understanding of CNC lathe operations. Ability to read basic engineering drawings. Willingness to learn and take instruction. Good attention to detail.
