About the Role
The SHE Officer is a critical role that ensures compliance with all regulatory, ISO, and legal requirements relating to Safety, Health, and Environmental standards in our manufacturing facility. The successful candidate will provide health and safety guidance and support across manufacturing operations, promote a strong safety culture, and drive initiatives related to Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Customer Focus.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitoring implementation of SHE policies, procedures, and standards across the site during each shift
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, ISO standards, and legal obligations
- Supporting the achievement of Compliance Department KPIs and targets
- Implementing audits, inspections, and compliance checks on SHE systems
- Ensuring that legal documentation, inspections, and reports are maintained and submitted to the relevant authorities when required
- Monitoring activities such as water sampling, environmental checks, and regulatory reporting
- Providing SHE consulting and advisory services to plant operations
- Investigating workplace incidents and implementing preventative measures
- Conducting Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA)
- Reviewing and updating Standard Work Procedures (SWPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Delivering SHE inductions and training to employees and contractors
- Conducting regular health and safety inspections of equipment, facilities, machinery, and PPE
- Issuing work permits for staff and contractors where required
- Supporting initiatives that promote a strong safety culture through toolbox talks and safety bulletins
- Ensuring environmental management processes are implemented and maintained
- Conducting monthly environmental assessments and reporting findings
- Preparing and maintaining an environmental audit schedule
- Conducting internal audits and implementing corrective actions
- Investigating workplace incidents, injuries, and environmental concerns
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to environmental performance
- Supporting plant energy efficiency initiatives
- Promoting awareness around energy-saving practices across the site
- Implementing energy-saving measures such as equipment shutdown schedules and lighting controls
- Identifying opportunities to introduce energy-efficient technologies
- Supporting programs to detect and repair energy losses such as compressed air leaks
- Ensuring compliance with current legislation and safety standards
- Conducting risk assessments across departments during HSE inspections
- Reviewing contractor risk assessments prior to commencement of work
- Identifying hazards and evaluating risk levels
- Implementing controls and improvement projects to reduce significant risks
- Supporting training and awareness programs to improve hazard management
- Attending daily production and SHEEQ meetings to provide safety updates
- Supporting the SHE representatives and operational teams with compliance requirements
- Driving the implementation of SHE initiatives and improvement actions
- Acting as an ambassador for the SHE department across all shifts
- Assisting with administrative tasks and maintaining SHE documentation systems such as SharePoint
- Supporting various compliance initiatives, including Blood Lead monitoring programs and improvement plans
- Participating in shift overtime and rotational weekend standby duties where required
Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent qualification
- Alternatively SAMTRAC certification
- Tertiary qualification in Safety Management, Environmental Management, or related field
- Training or experience related to OHS, ISO, Environmental, Noise, and Energy management
