Johannesburg: C&I Business Developer – Renewable Energy

Location: Midrand, Gauteng Employment Type: Contract Reporting To: Regional Manager Working Hours: 08:30 – 17:30 Seniority Level: Intermediate to Senior Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and well-connected C&I Business Developer to drive business growth within the renewable energy sector. This role requires a commercially focused professional with a proven track record in Commercial & Industrial solar and energy storage projects, as well as established relationships with key EPC contractors and solar distributors. The successful candidate will leverage their industry network to identify opportunities, develop strategic partnerships, structure commercial solutions, and expand the company’s market presence across South Africa. Key Responsibilities Strategic Business Development • Develop and maintain strong relationships with EPC contractors, solar distributors, and key industry stakeholders. • Identify and secure new business opportunities within the mining, industrial, and commercial sectors. • Leverage existing industry networks to generate qualified project leads and build a sustainable project pipeline. • Position the company as the preferred technology partner for C&I solar and battery storage solutions. Solution Development & Financial Modelling • Design tailored solar PV and battery energy storage solutions that meet client technical and commercial requirements. • Conduct financial modelling, including ROI analysis, payback calculations, and financing structures. • Prepare compelling business cases and commercial proposals for clients and partners. Commercial Negotiation & Contract Management • Lead commercial negotiations and support the execution of contracts, including PPAs and turnkey agreements. • Manage the sales process from opportunity identification through to contract signing and project handover. • Monitor payment milestones and support risk mitigation throughout the project lifecycle. Market Intelligence & Compliance • Monitor renewable energy regulations, energy policies, wheeling frameworks, and industry developments. • Identify opportunities related to carbon credits, energy trading, and regulatory incentives. • Support compliance with applicable South African regulatory and B-BBEE requirements. Project Coordination • Collaborate with engineering teams, EPC partners, and relevant stakeholders to ensure successful project execution. • Facilitate smooth project handovers and maintain strong client relationships throughout project delivery. Minimum Requirements Qualifications • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field preferred. • National Diploma or equivalent technical/commercial qualification with relevant industry experience will be considered. Experience • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Commercial & Industrial solar and energy storage business development. • Proven involvement in solar projects ranging from 100kW to 50MW. • Demonstrated success in private power generation, embedded generation, or renewable energy project development. • Existing relationships with key EPC contractors and solar distributors are essential. • Proven track record of securing and developing business within mining, industrial, and commercial sectors. Technical & Commercial Skills • Strong understanding of commercial solar PV systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and microgrid solutions. • Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial modelling. • Experience using CRM systems and preparing executive-level presentations. • Strong commercial negotiation and contract management capabilities. Personal Attributes • Excellent communication and presentation skills. • Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial mindset. • Ability to work independently and drive results in a competitive market. • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building abilities. • Valid South African driver’s licence and willingness to travel extensively.
