Johannesburg: Warehouse Supervisor

Job Description

Key Responsibilities 1. Warehouse Operations – Supervise all daily warehouse activities (receiving, put-away, storage, picking, cutting, packing, loading and dispatch). – Allocate work, set priorities and monitor productivity of warehouse staff. – Ensure correct handling of aluminium profiles, glass sheets and accessories to prevent damage and breakage. – Oversee cutting of aluminium and glass according to cutting lists, job cards and customer orders. – Ensure safe operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, glass lifters, trolleys and other material handling equipment. – Maintain high standards of housekeeping (5S), ensuring aisles, racks, cutting areas and dispatch zones are neat, safe and clearly marked. 2. Inventory Management – Ensure accurate receiving and capturing of incoming stock against GRVs and supplier documents. – Supervise binning and racking in line with product codes, lengths, thickness, finish and customer demand. – Conduct regular cycle counts and support full stock takes; investigate and resolve stock variances. – Monitor slow-moving, damaged or obsolete stock and escalate for action (returns, write-offs, promotions). – Work closely with Procurement / Sales to prevent stock-outs on key profiles, accessories and glass types. 3. Dispatch & Logistics – Plan and prioritise picking and loading based on delivery routes and customer collection times. – Ensure orders are picked accurately by profile code, length, colour/finish, glass thickness and specification. – Check that loads are securely and safely packed on trucks (especially glass racks and long aluminium lengths). – Coordinate with drivers, transport providers and customers to reduce delays and returns. – Handle queries and resolve issues related to short deliveries, damages and warehouse errors. 4. People Management – Supervise warehouse assistants, pickers, packers, cutters and forklift operators. – Train and coach staff on correct handling of aluminium and glass, safety procedures and standard operating procedures. – Manage timekeeping, overtime, leave planning and basic performance issues in line with HR policies. – Promote a positive, disciplined and safety-conscious team culture. 5. Health, Safety & Compliance – Enforce all health and safety rules, including PPE, safe lifting, glass handling and machine safety. – Ensure compliance with company policies, SOPs and legal requirements relevant to warehouse operations. – Report and investigate accidents, near-misses, breakages and incidents; implement corrective actions. – Conduct daily equipment inspections (forklifts, cranes, cutting tables, glass lifters) and report faults. 6. Administration & Reporting – Ensure all warehouse documentation (GRVs, delivery notes, picking slips, return notes, transfer notes) is completed accurately and timeously. – Capture and approve warehouse data on the ERP / stock management system. – Provide daily / weekly reports on stock accuracy, damages, labour hours, productivity and OT. – Assist with audits and provide required documents and explanations. 7. Continuous Improvement – Recommend improvements to layout, racking, handling methods and flow of materials. – Support implementation of barcoding, scanners and system upgrades. – Identify waste (time, damage, movement) and drive initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce cost. Minimum Requirements – Grade 12 (Matric) essential – Relevant certificate or diploma in Logistics, Warehouse Management, Supply Chain or related field (advantageous) – Valid forklift license (advantageous) – Health & Safety training (advantageous) – 3-5 years experience in a warehouse/logistics environment – 2 years in a supervisory role – Experience in an aluminium, glass, hardware, construction materials or building supplies environment strongly preferred – Proven experience handling long-length aluminium profiles and glass sheets – Experience working with an ERP / stock management system (e.g. SAP, Syspro, Palladium, Pastel, etc.) Skills & Competencies – Strong leadership and people supervision skills. – Excellent planning, organising and time management. – High attention to detail and accuracy (especially with codes, lengths and quantities). – Good numerical and basic analytical skills. – Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities. – Good communication skills (verbal and written). – Strong safety awareness and risk management mindset. – Customer-focused attitude and problem-solving ability. – Computer literate (MS Excel, Word, Outlook; ERP systems). – Able to work flexible hours, including overtime and Saturdays, when required.
