Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking an Organic Chef/Gardener to join our team at HotelJobs, where you will be responsible for cultivating a large variety of organic produce and herbs in 4 different climatic zones of Madagascar. This unique role combines horticultural experience with culinary flair, ensuring that freshly harvested ingredients are used to prepare nutritious, flavorful dishes. You will work closely with kitchen staff to design menus based on seasonal availability, while also managing our 6-hectare farm just outside Antananarivo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and maintaining an organic kitchen garden in our 3 existing properties
  • Setting up and sowing crops throughout the year on our 6-hectare farm
  • Collaborating with kitchen staff to design menus based on seasonal availability
  • Utilizing innovative methods for harvesting, pickling, jams, chutneys, drying, and preserving excess produce
  • Sourcing seasonal fruit from other areas of the country
  • Managing composting and pest control using natural methods
  • Keeping detailed records of planting cycles and yields

Requirements

  • Experience in both professional cookery and horticulture
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge about sustainable food and gardening practices
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly
  • Proactive approach to finding additional revenue streams for excess product or innovative uses of existing locally sourced goods

Qualifications

  • Formal education in Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field (if applicable)
  • Relevant certifications or training in organic gardening and sustainable food systems (if applicable)

Salary & Benefits

Salary: $20,000 plus accommodation and transport (to be determined)

Benefits:

  • 2 return flights per calendar year to/from Johannesburg
  • Visa costs covered by MCC
  • 30 working days holiday per calendar year
  • Accommodation in the capital either on the farm or nearby
  • Transport as needed when traveling to our properties
  • All related travel expenses and food covered while on duty

About the Role

We are seeking an Organic Chef/Gardener to join our team at HotelJobs, where you will have the unique opportunity to cultivate a large variety of organic produce and herbs in 4 different climatic zones of Madagascar, while creatively incorporating them into seasonal menus across our 3 tourism properties. This role requires a strong commitment to sustainable and organic gardening practices, as well as a passion for innovative, garden-to-table cuisine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and maintaining an organic kitchen garden in our 3 existing properties
  • Setting up and managing our 6 hectare farm just outside the capital Antananarivo
  • Sowing and harvesting crops throughout the year
  • Collaborating with kitchen staff to design menus based on what is seasonally available
  • Innovative uses of harvested products, including pickling, jams, chutneys, drying and preserving
  • Sourcing seasonal fruit from other areas of the country
  • Managing composting, pest control using natural methods
  • Keeping detailed records of planting cycles and yields

Requirements

  • Experience in both professional cookery and horticulture
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge about sustainable food and gardening practices

Qualifications

  • Formal education/certifications in horticulture or a related field (if applicable)

Salary & Benefits

  • Starting salary: $20,000 per annum (nett amount)
  • Accommodation provided in the capital either on the farm or nearby
  • Transport provided as needed
  • 2 return flights per calendar year to/from Johannesburg

  • Transport as needed when traveling to our 3 properties
  • All related travel expenses and food will be covered when traveling to our 3 properties

About the Role

We are seeking an Organic Conscious Farm to Table Chef/Gardener to join our team at HotelJobs’ 3 tourism properties in Madagascar. This unique role combines horticultural experience with culinary flair, ensuring that freshly harvested ingredients are used to prepare nutritious and flavorful dishes. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for cultivating organic produce and herbs across our 4 different climatic zones, creatively incorporating them into seasonal menus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and maintain an organic kitchen garden in our 3 existing properties
  • Set up and manage our 6 hectare farm just outside the capital Antananarivo
  • Sow and harvest crops throughout the year
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff to design menus based on seasonal availability
  • Develop innovative uses of harvested products, including pickling, jams, chutneys, drying, and preserving
  • Source seasonal fruit from other areas of the country
  • Manage composting and pest control using natural methods
  • Keep detailed records of planting cycles and yields

Requirements

  • Sourcing seasonal fruit from other areas of the country

This unique role blends horticultural experience with culinary flair, ensuring that freshly harvested ingredients are used to prepare nutritious, flavourful dishes. The position requires a strong commitment to sustainable and organic gardening practices, as well as a passion for innovative, garden-to-table cuisine. Key duties include planning and maintaining an organic kitchen garden in our 3 existing properties as well as setting up our 6 hectare farm just outside the capital Antananarivo, sowing and harvesting crops throughout the year, and collaborating with kitchen staff to design menus based on what is seasonally available. Innovative uses of harvested products and excesses, including pickling, jams, chutneys, drying and preserving would be required, as would sourcing seasonal fruit from other areas of the country. The Organic Chef/Gardener also manages composting, pest control using natural methods, and keeps detailed records of planting cycles and yields. Candidates should have experience in both professional cookery and horticulture, excellent organisational skills, and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge about sustainable food and gardening practices. The successful candidate will be based primarily in the capital city, however they would spend significant time in our properties working with the kitchens and gardeners. There will initially be 2-3 staff at the main farm in the capital to manage as well as a head gardener in each of the properties. Investigating additional revenue steams for excess product or innovative uses of existing locally sourced goods would be useful also. Details Contract length initially 18-months to 2-years extendable Start Date: April-June 2026 Key qualities: flexible, enthusiastic, able to work independently, proactive Salary: Unknown at this stage but starting from $20,000 plus accommodation and transport Conditions MCC will provide 2 return flights per calendar year to/from Johannesburg We will cover visa costs and provide 30 working days holiday per calendar year We will provide accommodation in the capital either on the farm or nearby, we will also provide transport as needed When travelling to our 3 properties we will cover all related travel expenses and food etc You should have a clean bill of health and a clen driving licence Madagascar will require a Criminal record check to obtain a visa We will pay your salary monthly into your chosen bank account as a nett amount (we pay from Mauritius so there should be no tax taken from SA).
